Meet the Grandmother of Juneteenth: Opal Lee’s Inspiring Journey
Who is Dr. Opal Lee?
Known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” Dr. Opal Lee is a living legend whose tireless advocacy helped make Juneteenth a federal holiday. Born in Marshall, Texas, in 1926 and raised in Fort Worth, she witnessed firsthand the struggles of her community, including the destruction of her family’s home on June 19, 1939, when she was just 12 years old. Undeterred by adversity, Ms. Opal has spent her life fighting for justice, serving on numerous boards and organizations, including Habitat for Humanity and the Tarrant County Black Historical & Genealogical Society, preserving the history of Black Fort Worth.
At the remarkable age of 89, Dr. Lee began her historic walking campaign from Fort Worth to Washington, D.C., walking 2.5 miles in cities across the country. Her steps symbolized the 2.5 years it took for news of the Emancipation Proclamation to reach Texas, freeing the last enslaved people. Her 2019 online petition to establish Juneteenth as a national holiday garnered over 1.6 million signatures, amplifying her call for national recognition.
Dr. Opal Lee was present on June 17, 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. Reflecting on the significance of the moment, she declared, “Now we can celebrate freedom from the 19th of June to the 4th of July!”
A passionate community leader, she has served as Chairman of the Community Food Bank, where she helped secure a 33,000 sq. ft. facility that now feeds 500 families a day. As the oldest living board member of the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation (NJOF), she continues to champion Juneteenth awareness nationwide.
Her efforts have earned her widespread recognition, including three honorary doctorates, the 2021 Texan of the Year title, and even a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. Most recently, she was awarded the 2024 Medal of Freedom by President Joe Biden.
Dr. Opal Lee’s dedication to freedom, community, and history serves as a powerful reminder that one person’s perseverance can change the world. She now serves as Honorary Chair of the National Juneteenth Museum, ensuring that future generations understand the significance of Juneteenth and its legacy of resilience and hope.
