Opal Lee: The Grandmother of Juneteenth’s Legacy

Dr. Opal Lee is known proudly as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” and her lifelong fight for equality continues to inspire generations. Born in 1926 in Marshall, Texas, Dr. Lee. She moved to Fort Worth, TX in 1938 when personal pain turned into purpose after racial violence destroyed her family home when she was a child. Instead of giving up, she committed her life to education, community service, and advocating for justice.

At 89 years old, Dr. Lee walked from Fort Worth to Washington, D.C. to bring national attention to the importance of Juneteenth. Her courage and determination helped lead to Juneteenth becoming a federal holiday in 2021. Today, she continues to speak, teach, and uplift communities across the country.

This official site celebrates her legacy, shares her exclusive collection of museum-quality prints and books, and highlights her ongoing work to preserve history and empower future leaders. Explore her story, discover her impact, and join the mission to keep the spirit of freedom alive.
